The 14th World Conference on Tobacco or Health, held from March 8-12, 2009, at the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA), Mumbai, organized by Salaam Bombay Foundation, was inaugurated by esteemed dignitaries, including the former Governor of Maharashtra, Hon. Shri S.C. Jamir, the former Union Health Minister, Hon. Shri Anbumani Ramadoss, and the former Home Minister of Maharashtra, Hon. Shri Jayant Patil. This prestigious event saw the participation of 2,093 delegates from 107 countries. The theme of the conference was “Global Tobacco Control: Multi-Sectoral Approach to Tobacco Control: Policies, Pathways, Partners and People.” It was brought to life through 835 abstracts, 395 oral presentations, 440 posters, and 25 ancillary meetings held before and after the conference.

The conference on advancing tobacco control policies was designed to enhance stakeholder engagement and integrate a broader range of professional associations and NGOs into tobacco control initiatives. It emphasized increasing interest and awareness within local communities while building a strong network for effective action against tobacco. The event served as a valuable learning platform, allowing both local and international organizations to engage, exchange insights, and explore new strategies in tobacco control. Noteworthy progress was achieved in areas such as education, strategy development, networking, and mobilization. Additionally, the conference effectively raised public awareness about tobacco control and positively shifted media attitudes towards a more health-conscious stance.
